The Truth About Normality

09/03/2019

The main problem with us as beings, is that we judge too much. We focus on all the negative things about people around us, instead of focusing on the positives. We have this...Illusion that we are superior to others. We have standards set in society, and if you don't meet those standards, you're not considered normal. Normal? What exactly is normal? Normality is just a word someone made up to convince others they are better than everyone else. So what if you're not normal? That's not a word. A word doesn't define who a person is. We get all these labels on us instead. Ever heard of the saying, "Never judge a book by it's cover"? That's exactly what everyone is doing.

You don't realize how much you hurt people just saying these things. You don't know what they've gone through. You don't know who they are, what their dreams are, who they want to be, who they are... You just see them as what they are labeled as. Losers. Freaks. Nerds, Special Needs. It's the fact that they are different than you that you think gives you the authority to do that. To make them feel bad for everything they've gone through.

Ever since I was a kid, I always had this...label. People automatically saw me for what I was labeled as "fat, annoying, white girl who sucks up to teachers". When in reality, thats not who I was. I was this little girl, making friends as good as I could, and yeah teachers like me, I was an exceptional student...in most cases. Thats what bothers me the most. We believe the things we hear about other people. Sometimes without really realizing what we're doing, whether we're trying to make a point, or something accidentally slips out, we make a reputation for people. We make their lives harder than it should be.

Why don't we ever look around? Why don't we help those who really need help? Why can't we truly see what's going on? It's the fact that everyone is different that throws us off. It comes back to the normality idea. If you look up the noun, normality, it means "the condition of being normal; the state of being usual, typical, or expected". Typical, expected. Standards. It's what we're supposed to live up to. But answer this? What if you can't live up to these standards? What are they supposed to do? Edit the standards? No, they're gonna through that "you're not normal" line at you. But the truth is this.

There is no such thing as Normality, and if there is, it's so overrated. As long as you are yourself, you're living up to standards. Not society's, but yours. Everyone is different, and in essence, that's what makes us normal. That's what makes us who we are. As long as you stay yourself, you won't be bothered by a label. Who cares anyway, right? I mean who is to say how you live your life? Only you. Instead of judging, try kindness instead. You never know who will make you laugh, smile, and just be there for you, if you don't introduce yourself and say hello. Try that for a change. Defy society's expectations, and standards. Don't be normal, be you.
